Howard Evans Roofing and Cladding successfully completed overcladding works at the Matalan store in Northampton.
Matalan, a leading UK retailer known for offering quality fashion and homeware at affordable prices since 1985, required essential roofing upgrades while maintaining full store operations.
Scope of Works
- Access & Safety:
- Erected TG20:21-compliant scaffold access staircases and platforms in full compliance with the Working at Height Regulations.
- Installed sacrificial netting to protect fragile roof areas.
- Site Setup & Welfare:
- Established a secure Heras-fenced compound for storage, skips, and parking.
- Provided a self-contained welfare unit for the duration of the works.
- Assumed provision of power and water by the client.
- Material Handling:
- Utilized a HIAB crane lorry for efficient hoisting of materials and waste to and from roof level.
- Roofing System Installation:
- Installed a bracket and bar spacer system fixed through existing sheeting into purlins.
- Laid 160mm glass mineral wool quilt insulation between support bars.
- Fixed 0.7mm plastisol-coated profiled steel sheets in Goosewing Grey, complete with filler pieces and TEK screw fixings.
- Supplied and installed matching flashings and closures.
- Ventilation Adjustments:
- Repositioned existing mushroom vents and installed plastisol flat plate flashings to ensure watertight detailing and prevent water ponding.
- Structural Integrity:
- Conducted a structural survey to confirm the existing frame could support the additional load.
- Completion:
- Cleared all waste, surplus materials, and equipment.
- Left the site clean, tidy, and ready for continued use.
Project Outcome
The project was delivered on time and within the agreed budget of £250,000. Effective communication with the client ensured minimal disruption to store operations, allowing Matalan to remain fully open throughout the works. The client expressed high satisfaction, describing the result as “an excellent job.”
