Howard Evans Roofing and Cladding recently completed a major project at the Telford International Centre, one of the UK’s top venues for events and
conferences.

With over 270 stores and an e-commerce platform, Matalan serves 11 million loyal customers annually, offering a broad range of products and outstanding quality.
The store had been experiencing significant leaks. Howard Evans Roofing and Cladding utilised an overclad system, installing Hornsey Steels cladding panels
across the entire roof.

The team installed an 80mm high bracket and bar system, securely anchored through the roof into the existing purlins.

This was followed by the addition of glass fibre quilt insulation and 0.7mm Plastisolcoated sheets in goosewing grey, fastened with tek screws and caps.

Filler pieces were inserted at both the top and bottom of the sheets, and all required closures, flashings, cappings, and Decktites were fitted. Plastisol-coated flat plate sheets were also installed on the parapet wall at the front elevation.

Despite the store remaining operational throughout, we carefully planned the project to minimise disruption. Noisy activities, including the installation of the support bar system, were scheduled at agreed times with the store to avoid interference with daily operations.

Safety was a priority throughout the work. The team took additional measures with the roof lights, ensuring all bolts were securely fastened to prevent any risk of falling into the store during the external works.

All leaks fully resolved upon the completion of the project. The project finished within budget and two weeks ahead of schedule.

Furthermore, two apprentices gained valuable on-site experience, enhancing their accreditation portfolios.

Both the store team and Matalan’s senior construction management expressed their satisfaction with the outcome, particularly commending the efficiency of the site teams and the resolution of the leaks.
