Howard Evans Roofing and Cladding have recently completed the slating works at The Fleece in Cirencester. The result was superb, with excellent work by our slating and tiling division.

The original stone roof was removed and put back in Cotswold stone. We completed structural repairs to the roof and numerous repairs to various roofs on the property, with scaffolding erected for safe access to the works.

We began the project by carefully stripping the natural Cotswold stone from the structure. Each piece of stone was meticulously set aside, ensuring that as much as possible could be reused in the restoration process. This step was crucial not only for preserving the historical integrity of the building but also for maintaining the aesthetic charm characteristic of Cotswold stone.

Once the stone was removed and sorted, we focused on the underlying structure. We installed new felt and lath onto the existing rafters, providing a robust and reliable base for the stonework to come.

This stage was essential to ensure the durability and weatherproofing of the roof, preparing it to support the weight of the stone and withstand the elements for years to come.

With the foundational work completed, we proceeded to relay the original stone. The stones were carefully placed back into their positions, preserving the historical layout and appearance of the building.

However, some stones were beyond salvage, so we supplemented the original materials with new reclaimed stone. This carefully sourced stone matched the existing ones as closely as possible, both in appearance and age, to ensure a seamless integration that respects the heritage of the structure while ensuring its stability and longevity.

Additional works on site by others included a new render with a lime pebble dash render, the replacement of multiple windows, which were at the end of life, with Akoya double-glazed windows, the replacement of an existing bin store and formed a new garden walled beer garden.

All works were completed within the agreed time scales and budget. It’s also great to hear it is trading well now that all works are complete.

“We recently handed over The Fleece at Cirencester for Daniel Thwaites following months of hard work by all the teams involved. The result has been superb and it’s great to hear it is trading well now that summer has finally arrived!”
