The Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham is situated in the heart of Birmingham in Brindley Place, less than a mile from the Utilita Arena Birmingham, Symphony Hall, ICC, LEGOLAND, and National SEA LIFE Centre.
The hotel was experiencing leaks, following a design issue with the roof, where water was ponding in flash flood conditions. Furthermore, a pipe leaked onto the roof, causing water to pond daily and extreme ponding in wet weather conditions.
The water was entering the building in the corners over the windows, and the duct boards damaged the existing single-ply membrane. The original roof design was not fit for purpose and was causing several issues and concerns for the busy hotel.
Howard Evans Roofing team had to remove all standing water from the roof before commencing work each day, from both the pipe and rainfall and used two puddle pumps and wet vacs for assistance.
This was further aggravated by the heavy rainfall encountered throughout the time spent on site. The SPV Foreman liaised with the hotel daily, updating them regarding progress and areas of work and ensuring minimal disruption.
A 100-foot scaffolding tower was erected for access to the works, along with haki stairs and a hoist to move materials and rubbish to and from the roof.
Recovery boards were added to create a fall, as well as a 300mm gutter was added on the roof to allow water to flow.
We re-diverted multiple pipes to reduce standing water further and ensured that the ponding and leaks were resolved for the long term.
We had several apprentices on-site throughout the works who assisted with the project and gained valuable experience of a challenging, detailed job where thinking outside the norm was required.
The work was completed over four months, within agreed budgets and to the agreed time scales, much to the satisfaction of our values.
