Howard Evans Roofing and Cladding have recently completed the overcladding works at the new Food Warehouse store in Bradford.
Iceland announced the closure of its existing branch at Woodhall Retail Park in
Thornbury, relocating to a much larger unit under its Food Warehouse brand.
The new store, occupying a vacant unit previously home to Bargain Buys, aligns with the Food Warehouse concept introduced in 2014. These stores are often
twice the size of traditional Iceland outlets, offering an extended range of goods in a warehouse-style setting with wide shopping aisles and spacious layouts.
The project involved a full roof overclad to improve durability, prevent leaks, and
enhance the store’s long-term resilience. The works were carefully coordinated
to ensure minimal disruption while the internal fit-out was underway. The entire
roof was overclad using Hornsey Steels cladding panels. A bracket and bar system (80mm high) was securely fixed through the roof into the existing purlins, followed by the installation of glass fibre quilt insulation. 0.7 plastisol coated steel sheets in goosewing grey were then fixed down to the support structure with TEK screws and caps, with filler pieces inserted at the top and bottom of the sheets.
All closures, flashings, cappings, and Dektites were installed for a secure finish.
Due to the complex shape of the roof, additional cutting and detailing were
required.
Prior to the project, the store had significant leaks, which were fully resolved following completion of the works.
With fit-out works taking place below, our team carefully coordinated with the
contractors to complete works to the purlins safely and efficiently, ensuring the
interior remained protected throughout the project. Specialist small cherry pickers, designed for internal use, were utilised to install additional purlins for extra strength, as agreed with the construction team.
Extra outlets were installed in the valley gutters to improve water flow efficiency,
and internal piping was run through the store as requested, ensuring effective
drainage during heavy rainfall.
Despite challenges posed by adverse weather conditions, including snow and ice, the project was completed within budget and within the agreed timeframe. Iceland’s senior construction management expressed their satisfaction with both the efficiency and quality of the works.
The store opened to an excellent reception, with the first 100 customers receiving £1,000 in vouchers. All works were completed within the agreed timescales and budgets and are covered by an insurance-backed warranty.
